Zac Taylor on why Ja’Marr Chase and Jake Browning were absent from practice

Ja’Marr Chase has not yet practiced for the Cincinnati Bengals as he awaits a contract extension.

It’s not ideal, but at least Chase has been present at every practice and has gotten a little work done while also coaching other players.

That changed on Tuesday, as Chase was absent for the first time since training camp began in late July.

After practice, head coach Zac Taylor gave a brief update on Chase, who will now remain on a day-to-day basis, but declined to elaborate.

Taylor also gave an update on backup quarterback Jake Browning, who missed practice today due to a rib injury and will therefore be out for some time.

Chase, who is entering his fourth NFL season, had been planning on sitting out before today, meaning sitting out while remaining with the team. With contract negotiations seemingly not moving forward, perhaps he or his agent thought it was time to turn this into a sitting out where Chase will not be with the team, but that’s just speculation at the moment.

As for Browning, the Bengals face a dilemma at quarterback for this week’s game against the Chicago Bears. Joe Burrow and most of their starters are out, so if Browning is out, it means the Bengals will have to rely on Logan Woodside and Rocky Lombardi. After a promising outing in the first preseason game, Woodside could now pose a real threat to the 53-man roster as the third quarterback.
