“Youth Hometown Lights” in Wythe County: Young football players in the spotlight

WYTHE COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ) – Wythe County Parks & Recreation is offering the county’s youth football players the opportunity to play under the lights at local high school stadiums on Friday nights during the 2024 football season.

As part of the Youth Hometown Lights initiative, George Wythe, Fort Chiswell and Rural Retreat youth league teams will each play at their future high school stadiums on a Friday night. These games will take place while Wythe County high school varsity teams have an away game or a week off.

The following applies to all dates and locations: The first game starts at 5:30 p.m. and the second at 7:00 p.m.

The first games will be held on Friday, September 6th at George Wythe High School, where the junior and varsity teams of the Wytheville Youth League will compete. The George Wythe High School varsity team will play away at Altavista the same night.

While Fort Chiswell High School’s varsity team plays away at Eastside on Friday, September 13, Fort Chiswell’s JV and varsity youth league teams will play at Fort Chiswell High School.

The final games of the series will be held on Friday, September 20th at Rural Retreat High School, where Rural Retreat’s junior and varsity youth league teams will compete. This will take place during the Rural Retreat High School varsity team’s off week.

“By providing the opportunity to play under the lights, we wanted to put the spotlight on the youth athletes who play and cheer as part of our recreational program,” added Kelley Davis, athletic coordinator for the City of Wytheville Parks and Recreation Department. “We hope and desire that these young athletes will continue to play and cheer on this main stage as they grow older.”

Concessions are offered, with proceeds going to support local league programs.
