“Chefs and volunteers alike took on the task of making the longest Cuban sandwich ever. Despite all the elements, volunteers battled to break the record by achieving a sandwich of 360 feet. That’s the length of a football field. The journey was not quick, but Rene Marquis of the American Culinary Federation was ready to not only break the record but also help those in need,” said the

“Tampa has the oldest Cuban sandwich in the world and now we’re going to have the largest Cuban sandwich in the world, but the best part is that the community has come together and we’re feeding people in need,” he said.

“After the record was broken at 366 feet, the rush to pack the sandwich began. Organizers estimate it can feed more than 750 people, and they want to keep it as fresh as possible.”

“This special foodie event is a collaboration between the International Cuban Sandwich Festival and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers,”

“Contestants will attempt to break the current record of 330 feet held by Kissimmee. Festival producer Jolie Padilla expressed her excitement, stating, “We will make the longest Cuban sandwich in Tampa and break Kissimmee’s record. This year, the longest sandwich will be made in West Tampa with the help of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. When it’s finished, we will donate it to a homeless shelter and that sandwich will feed over 700 homeless people.”

“A Cuban sandwich is a variation of a ham and cheese sandwich that probably originated in cafes for Cuban workers in Tampa or Key West, two early Cuban immigrant communities in Florida that were centered on the cigar industry.

“Later, Cuban exiles and emigrants brought it to Miami, where it is also very popular. The sandwich consists of ham, (mojo) fried pork, Swiss cheese, pickles, mustard and sometimes salami on Cuban bread. Salami is included in Tampa, but usually not in South Florida.

“The Cuban sandwich is at the center of a long-standing friendly rivalry between Miami and Tampa. As part of this rivalry, the Historic Tampa Cuban Sandwich was named the “Signature Sandwich of the City of Tampa” by the Tampa City Council in 2012.” (Wikipedia)
