Friday, October 4
New perspectives on ageing and lifespan in dairy cows
Matt Lucy, Ph.D., Professor, University of Missouri-Columbia
Approved for (1) ARPAS continuing education credit
The life expectancy of modern dairy cows is short and most cows are culled because they are lame, infertile, sick or unproductive. The general interpretation of a culled dairy cow is that she is “exhausted” and needs to be replaced. Although the reasons for culling are known, the “why” a cow is “exhausted” is unclear. This seminar will examine what we know about dairy cow aging and what the future holds for extending the productive lifespan of dairy cows.
