Woodbury County demands decommissioning plan for proposed carbon capture pipelines

Woodbury County demands decommissioning plan for proposed carbon capture pipelines

SIOUX CITY (KTIV) – Woodbury County supervisors are looking to the future regarding the proposed carbon capture pipeline that may run through the county.

At their meeting Tuesday night, Supervisors Jeremy Taylor and Mark Nelson proposed that the county require the creation of a decommissioning plan for the pipelines proposed by Summit Carbon Solutions.

The plan would require Summit Carbon Solutions to develop a decommissioning plan to restore the thousands of acres of land affected by the pipeline once the pipelines are no longer in use.

“If they overcome all of those hurdles and if they succeed (in moving the pipelines to Woodbury County), then we will require them to begin a decommissioning process to return the land to the condition it was in before the pipelines were moved,” Supervisor Taylor said.

The county council remains opposed to the construction of carbon pipelines, but voted unanimously on Tuesday evening to require Summit Carbon Solutions to submit a plan before construction begins.

“We just want to make sure that if this is successful, we have plans in place to protect our country and our future generations,” Taylor said.

The county’s Planning and Zoning Commission, together with the Board of Adjustment, will now begin drafting an ordinance to implement this plan.
