Woman mourns 10-month-old daughter and mother by dressing mannequins in their clothes

ROCKY MOUNT, Va. (WDBJ/Gray News) – A Virginia woman is mourning the loss of her loved ones in a way that some may find unusual. She placed fully clothed mannequins outside her home in memory of her mother and daughter.

What started as a Halloween tradition for a woman named Siobhan evolved into an outlet that allows her to mourn her loved ones, including her mother and 10-month-old daughter, WDBJ reports.

Siobhan started putting fully clothed mannequins in her front garden four years ago. From then on, she decided to leave the mannequins outside all year round.

After moving into her new home on Pell Avenue in Rocky Mount, Siobhan initially decided not to put up the mannequins, but after losing her 10-month-old daughter in May, she changed her mind.

“I started placing them that day,” Siobhan said.

For Siobhan, the mannequins are reminders of the loss of loved ones. Some of the clothes she dresses them in belonged to her mother, who died just two weeks before her daughter.

“My dad died, my mom died and now my daughter. Oh, and my dog died too, a month after my daughter. It was so much. It was like, ‘Oh my God. What else?'” she said.

Siobhan recently added a baby doll to the exhibit that resembled her late daughter and even dressed her in her onesie.

“My daughter was just the happiest baby. When she cried, she was happy. She cried, wanted a bottle, (but) she smiled,” she said.

Siobhan feared the exhibition would provoke negative reactions, but is happy that the community has accepted her way of mourning her family.

“I don’t care if it’s weird or not. I enjoy doing it,” she said.
