According to Gardena Police, the suspects are department employees.

Investigators later determined that the suspect was 36-year-old Jessica Chavez of Inglewood.

“Minutes before Gardena Police officers arrived, Los Angeles County firefighters observed Chavez getting into an altercation with an unknown man. They stopped to assist her. While sitting in their vehicle and talking with her, Chavez became enraged, physically struck the firefighter and fled the scene,” police said in a statement.

Chavez had briefly left the area before police officers passing by happened to stop to assist firefighters just before she returned.

Officers attempted to negotiate with Chavez, but she fled again, sparking a chase.
