Witness reports on the fatal accident in which three people died and a 16-year-old ended up behind bars

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – A 16-year-old is behind bars after fleeing from police and causing a crash in Hickory Hill that left three people dead and seven others injured.

Kendrell Cummings, an eyewitness to Tuesday night’s crash, said he was stunned when he saw the remains of the fiery five-car crash at the corner of Raines Road and Kirby Parkway.

“The flames went up so high, probably higher than here. I thought someone hit a pump and they just went up and I just thought, buddy, and then we ran out,” Cummings said.

The fatal accident was recorded on the surveillance camera of the SAV-ON Mart gas station. A car can be seen being hit by the 16-year-old suspect at a red light and the police then rushing to the scene of the accident.

According to Memphis police, officers attempted to make a traffic stop near Getwell and Cottonwood around 9:45 p.m., but the driver refused to stop.

Officers lost sight of the suspect until he ran a red light, resulting in a five-vehicle crash at Raines and Kirby streets.

Cummings recorded these videos on the scene, in which a woman describes what she saw as police pursued the suspect.

“They started chasing him, and when they started chasing him, he got really fast. I swerved and he ran right into a (swear word),” said a witness at the scene.

Two 26-year-old women and a 47-year-old woman died.

A two-year-old girl was taken to hospital. Seven other victims were injured but are expected to recover. The condition of the 16-year-old driver was not life-threatening.

However, one witness said the extent of the damage caused by this one incident was unimaginable.

“Standing here and knowing that someone lost their life makes me cry,” Cummings said.

Memphis Police have not released any further information about this case or the identities of the suspect and victims.

The teenager is accused of aggravated robbery, evading arrest and illegal weapons, including a machine gun.

This is at least the third fatal crash at the intersection of Raines Road and Kirby Pkwy in just over a year, all of which resulted in a chase by Memphis police.
