Will another hotel be built in Woodbridge? Here’s what we know

WOODBRIDGE – A hotel may be under construction in the township’s Menlo Park Terrace neighborhood.

Applicant DCD Capital LLC is scheduled to appear before the township’s Planning Board on Aug. 21 to present plans to build a four-story, 122-room extended-stay hotel at 927 West Kelly St.

The name of the franchise was not known to municipal officials.

The applicant, according to documents filed with the municipality, is seeking preliminary and final approval of the main development plan and approval of a smaller subdivision to take the portions of the West Kelly Street right-of-way that will be transferred upon release to Lots 2 and 4, which are located on the opposite side of the West Kelly Street right-of-way, and to incorporate those portions of the West Kelly Street right-of-way to create a 3.72 acre parcel within the redevelopment area.

The application also calls for improvements to the site, including parking facilities.

The property is located in the West Kelly Street 2 Redevelopment Area, where redevelopment is subject to the provisions of the West Kelly Street 2 Redevelopment Plan.

The redevelopment plan, which was adopted by the municipal council at the beginning of the year, provides that storage facilities, hotels, retail stores, offices, doctor’s offices, banks and trust institutions, fitness centers and daycare centers are permitted as possible uses in the redevelopment area.

“The impact on the community is very limited because it is an extended stay hotel. Extended stay hotels are the least disruptive of all things as far as traffic goes,” said Mayor John McCormac.

He said West Kelly Street is a long dead-end street that leads south to Route 1.

The West Kelly Street 2 redevelopment area consists of the Garden Farm Market property at 927 West Kelly Street. The area includes a 25,000-square-foot commercial building and a large parking lot and is located between a neighborhood of single-family homes and commercial properties along Route 1, the redevelopment plan states.

“This redevelopment plan provides an opportunity to improve and better utilize the property along West Kelly Street in the Menlo Park Terrace section of Woodbridge Township. This plan will encourage the conversion of this property to a productive commercial use along West Kelly Street,” the plan states.

The future of the farmers market, which sells fruit, vegetables, fish and flowers, is uncertain. McCormac did not know if the building is leased. The farmer’s market manager could not be reached for comment.
