WI delegates await Vice President Kamala Harris’ keynote speech

WI delegates await Vice President Kamala Harris’ keynote speech

CHICAGO, Ill. (WBAY) – The Wisconsin delegation will be just feet away when Vice President Kamala Harris officially accepts her party’s nomination for president at the Democratic National Convention on Thursday.

The speech will be a significant moment for Harris, as she rose to the top of the candidacy just a few weeks ago when President Biden dropped his re-election bid.

Delegates at the United Center are eagerly awaiting today’s address from Vice President Kamala Harris. She will take the stage after other speakers, including Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren.

On Wednesday evening, Action 2 News accompanied the delegation to Vice Presidential candidate Tim Walz’s speech and many, including Governor Tony Evers, commented on what they hope to hear from Harris.

“I hope that at some point the party, Kamala, Tim, we really need it. It’s important. Infrastructure is not a particularly sexy topic of conversation for them, but we really need to make sure they understand how this impacts all these other areas. It’s important for the state of Wisconsin,” said Governor Evers.

“All of these policies of the Biden-Harris administration are just going to be passed on to the Harris-Waltz administration and continue to lead this country down a path of destruction,” Senator Johnson said. “So I think we just have to address this and hope, hope that the media will get honest and start asking her questions and demanding answers from her.”

Members of the Wisconsin delegation say they expect high energy, as they have all week. Republicans and Trump’s campaign team will also be watching the speech, which will be delivered in Chicago to a national audience.

“Her vision of where she wants to go with things. I think this is her chance to tell all of us here and all the people watching at home what the Harris administration is going to look like, and I think she’s going to get it done,” said Ann Jacobs, chair of the Wisconsin Elections Commission and a delegate to the DNC.

However, thousands of protesters are expected outside the arena, as has been the case all week.

A large majority calls on the Biden administration to end the war between Israel and Hamas.

Action 2 News asked protesters if they would support Democrats if they did not make the changes they were demanding and meet their demands.

“I cannot vote for someone who is continuing a genocide. I will not vote for that,” protester Tighe Barry told us.

Republicans will also be keeping an eye on Harris as Senator Ron Johnson continues to demand that she take media questions on policy issues. Senator Johnson spoke about this with Action 2 News in Chicago.

“Unless the media demands it, she won’t do it. She can’t do it. I mean, you saw the few times she went off the teleprompter, it was just one word salad after another and it doesn’t make any sense at all, just like her economic policy isn’t going to make any sense at all,” Senator Johnson said. It’s going to be very destructive.”

However, the governor said the momentum lies with Harris, not Donald Trump.

“People are excited, they obviously know it’s going to be a close race in Wisconsin,” said Governor Tony Evers
