OK, let’s first get something clear – Kamala Harris absolutely should not have offered RFK Jr. a place in her administration to get his support. She was smart to never consider him. Those who are worried that Trump will benefit from this need not worry.
The main reason for RFK’s exit is simple: his poll numbers had dropped so far that they no longer mattered. Last week he was at less than 5% and many of his “supporters” are not willing to actually vote for him. Many of his voters are left-leaning and will go back to Harris. Therefore, the actual number of votes Trump will win is negligible…
But what about the votes he’s going to lose? Consider Trump’s strategy of late: To be attractive to anyone outside his far-right base, he needs to appear relatively reasonable and level-headed. His strategy at the debates was supposedly to stay calm and limit the underhanded personal attacks. Let’s just say he hasn’t been very successful at that. In recent weeks, even Fox News hosts have criticized him for his odd obsession with Harris’ ethnic identity and personal life. He’s losing the plot and needs to stick to his politics, they say. If Trump’s path to victory is to appear more mature and more restrained, then working with RFK Jr. … you can fill in the blank here. Basically, if you’re more centrist and have considered voting for Trump and Vance, you now have to come to terms with RFK Jr. being in Trump’s cabinet or, I don’t know, as director of the CIA or something. With this support, RFK has betrayed his supposed values, and the rest of his family has now come forward and supported Harris. So yes, this is all a good thing for Harris!
And finally, my own experience confirms this. I am running for Congress in Florida’s 21st District against Brian Mast, and this is Great for my campaign. Mast has been following Trump at all of his rallies and wants to be part of his cabinet, so RFK Jr. will be attached to Mast’s name as well. I have met many Trump/Mast supporters whose support for them is hanging by a thread. It won’t take much for them to raise their hands and change their vote or not vote at all. I have been quite successful in persuading these voters and I think that has made my job a lot easier. Have no fear, Cossacks! The Democrats are stronger than ever.
