Why did Piers Morgan leave Good Morning Britain? Show celebrates 10th anniversary

Piers Morgan celebrated the 10th anniversary of Good Morning Britain with a social media post on X (formerly Twitter).

He wrote: “Happy 10th anniversary, Good Morning Britain. I spent five fun, eventful years there and loved every minute. Here’s a picture of me on my first (April 13, 2015) and last (March 9, 2021) day… divorce is never easy!”

Today (29 April) the show celebrates its tenth anniversary on television. Presented by Susanna Reid and Richard Madeley, ITV viewers were shown a compilation of some of the show’s greatest moments.

But why did Piers Morgan leave the show?

In March 2021, ITV announced that Piers Morgan had decided to leave the show.

This came after the presenter angrily left the set of the news show on March 8, 2021, following a heated discussion with colleague Alex Beresford about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s television interview with Oprah Winfrey.

By that point, the show had also received more than 40,000 complaints about Mr Morgan’s comments. He said he did not believe “a word” of the Duchess of Sussex’s statement after she told Oprah Winfrey that a senior royal had made remarks about the colour of her son’s skin and that she had been denied help for her suicidal thoughts.

ITV’s statement said: “Following discussions with ITV, Piers Morgan has decided that now is the time to leave Good Morning Britain. ITV has accepted this decision and has nothing further to add.”

Piers Morgan later revealed in his column in the Mail on Sunday what had really happened and led to his departure.

He admitted that he had “a bad night of interrupted sleep” before the events that led to his exit from the show.

He said other ITV executives had pressured him to apologise but he stood by his allegations.

He wrote: “It suddenly became crystal clear to me: screw it, I’m not going to apologize for not believing Meghan Markle, because the truth is that I don’t believe Meghan Markle. And in a free, democratic society, I should be allowed to disbelieve someone and say I don’t believe them.”

Mr Morgan decided to apologise and agreed to “leave GMB with immediate effect.”
