Dancing with the stars Co-host Julianne Hough shares an emotional update on her life, more than two years after her divorce from ex-husband Brooks Laich. Hough, who initially felt like she had “blown my whole life up,” has now changed her mindset. “I can actually start consciously by designing and creating a life that actually comes from my soul,” she said. On the Monday, August 12 episode of the Armchair Expert podcast, Hough took some time to reflect on her relationship with Laich. This came after host Dax Shephard asked Hough if she ever thought about “another time, another place” with her former husband. The answer? A resounding yes. However, Hough also said she was at peace with her decision to end the relationship.
“It wasn’t right. That can be hard to accept,” she said. “I feel like our relationship and our marriage were exactly right and that ending is right too. We both regret that it didn’t work out because I don’t think we had the maturity to be together. He was shrinking while I was expanding. We just couldn’t find ourselves in it.”
The former DDancing with the stars pro added that the two have accepted the end of their marriage, although they are sad that it didn’t work out. She also praised her ex, saying Laich has “the biggest heart I’ve ever had the privilege of being with.”

Hough and Laich originally separated in September 2019. Days later, their dogs died. It was all too much for Hough.
“It was a falling apart,” she said. “Everything I had ever known, everything I had put in place to control and protect me… I was married to this man who was more of a father figure to me, and as he changed, I changed. Everything was uprooted.”
Their separation only became public in May 2020, when they released a joint statement. “We lovingly and carefully took the time we needed to come to our decision to separate,” they said in a joint statement at the time. “We share an abundance of love and respect for one another and will continue to lead with the heart from that place. We respectfully ask for your compassion and respect for our privacy going forward.”

Five months later, Hough filed for divorce. The divorce was finalized in June 2022.
