Who’s speaking at the DNC tonight? Day 2 Speaker List – NBC Chicago

Editor’s Note: NBC Chicago offers a live feed of the evening and primetime speeches every Monday through Thursday in the player above and on the 24/7 streaming channel NBC 5 Chicago News.

On day two of the 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, several prominent names are in the spotlight, including former President Barack Obama, former First Lady Michelle Obama and many more.

Organizers also announced Tuesday that several leading Republicans will deliver speeches at the United Center in Chicago.

The second day of the convention follows an eventful Monday evening that included a surprise arrival from Vice President Kamala Harris, speeches from high-profile figures and a keynote address from President Joe Biden.

Here is an overview of who we know is speaking so far and when:

What time does the DNC start on Tuesday?

The “main program,” or speeches, are scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, a delay from the previously announced start time of 6 p.m. Organizers said the change was made to “ensure we stay on schedule.”

Organizers noted that there would likely be further changes to the schedule on Tuesday after Monday’s event required “real-time adjustments” and some speeches and appearances had to be canceled to accommodate Biden’s highly anticipated speech after the delays.

Schedule, speakers for day 2 of the DNC

While the full list of speakers and schedule for Tuesday have not yet been released, organizers have already announced a number of names on the agenda for the second day of the congress.

The Obamas are expected to headline the second night of the convention, a day after the unofficial farewell to Biden, who served as Obama’s vice president for eight years. Biden will not be in the hall to watch his former running mate’s speech, having left Chicago after his own speech.

According to the Harris campaign, Michelle Obama is expected to make the case for why Harris’ experience and values make her a good fit for the office of president. Her husband, Harris campaign officials said, will focus on what Democrats need to do to defeat Trump in the general election.

Some of the Democratic Party’s biggest stars will also be in attendance and speaking, including Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, Senator Bernie Sanders and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff.

Other speeches expected on Tuesday include: U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, Senator Tammy Duckworth, New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham and Mayor John Giles of Mesa, Arizona.

Giles is one of several Republican leaders who will speak at the DNC.

The Harris team announced Tuesday that several top Republican politicians will deliver speeches in Chicago, although the exact timing of their addresses was not immediately clear. Among the speakers are former U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger of Illinois, former Georgia Lieutenant Governor Geoff Duncan, former Trump White House aide Olivia Troye and Stephanie Grisham, who was White House press secretary.

Unlike on Monday, Harris herself is not expected to attend. Harris and vice presidential candidate Tim Walz are both expected to hold a joint rally at the site of the Republican National Convention. However, Walz and Harris both have speeches scheduled for later at the convention.

What is the theme for day 2 of the congress?

The convention’s theme is “For the People, For Our Future” and the focus will be on moving the country forward and building on the work of the Biden administration.

According to convention organizers, the theme of Tuesday’s events is “A Bold Vision for America’s Future,” a clear shift toward a new generation of Democrats and their leadership. After a Monday night that briefly touched on Harris’ possibilities but also honored Biden’s legacy and decades of accomplishments, convention organizers now appear ready to move on to the next leg of their journey.

In unveiling their plans for the week, convention organizers on Tuesday night described it as a way to contrast Harris’ forward-looking strategy with Trump’s less positive view of America’s future.

As on Monday, the Democrats plan to bring “ordinary Americans” and some artists to the stage each evening in addition to elected officials and party leaders.

The daily topics are:

Monday – “For the people”

Tuesday – “A bold vision for America’s future”

Wednesday – “A fight for our freedoms”

Thursday – “For our future”
