Allegations of stolen valor, a resurfaced drunk driving arrest and a controversial tampon policy are overshadowing Minnesota Governor Tim Walz’s bid for the 2024 Democratic Party ticket.

His selection as Kamala Harris’s vice presidential running mate thrust him into the spotlight and exposed him to both praise and ridicule from the media. For those unfamiliar with his record, the question is: Who exactly is Tim Walz?

Fox Nation’s latest special attempts to answer that question by diving into the political career of the former geography teacher and veteran who could become the next vice president if Harris emerges victorious in November.

As the Fox Nation special shows, the Nebraska-born Democrat from Minnesota began his political career in 2004 as a district coordinator for then-Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry. He later narrowly defeated his opponent, who held the office for 12 years, in the 2006 House of Representatives election with the support of the Teamsters and other unions, and went on to serve six terms in Congress, laying the groundwork for his even later run for governor.

“His district went from purple to red, but his voting record is clearly blue,” Fox News’ Brian Kilmeade said during the special.

“We talk about gender-equitable care and pour huge amounts of money into public schools, assuming that will solve the problems,” said Fox News contributor Joe Concha, referring to a widespread accusation among conservatives that Walz is overly progressive.

“But most importantly, the belief that the U.S. government should spend trillions of dollars to combat the climate crisis,” he continued.

Walz defeated a number of leading Democrats in the vice presidential race, including California Governor Gavin Newsom, Arizona Senator Mark Kelly, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, which raises the question: What skills does he bring to the running?

“I have no idea,” said Concha.

To some, he seems like a likable Midwesterner, a trait that could attract voters in swing states. He grew up in a small town in Nebraska, joined the military, attended a state college and became a teacher.

After meeting and marrying his wife Gwen, the duo moved back to their home state of Minnesota.

“This is someone who could be very well received in the major states,” Concha added.

But other stains on his past have resurfaced, including his 1995 drunken driving arrest. While some see this as problematic, others, including Democratic strategist Kevin Walling, see it as a story of redemption.

Republicans like Trump’s running mate JD Vance also question the timing of Walz’s retirement from the military in 2005, shortly before his unit was deployed to Iraq.

As governor, however, Walz has witnessed firsthand all of the major events of recent years, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the Black Lives Matter riots following the death of George Floyd in 2020.

Republicans have continually grilled him about his progressive stance on these and other issues, such as abortion and immigration.

But after President Biden’s poor performance in the debate against Donald Trump sent his re-election chances into a downward spiral, Kamala Harris took the reins as the presumptive nominee, leaving her to decide who would be her running mate should she assume the presidency.

“He’s really come to the surface as a happy warrior, as someone who’s not going to overshadow the top candidates,” Walling said.
