Unofficially, Labor Day weekend is the end of summer. The three-day weekend is the last big party, with trips to the beach and barbecues. Many kids go back to school the following Tuesday, so the weekend is their last big fun before the school year begins—the same goes for teachers. The joy of the summer months is over as we slowly drift into cooler weather.

Traditionally, white clothing is only allowed to be worn between Memorial Day and Labor Day. According to emilypost.com, in the early 20th century, people flocked to cabins or seaside cottages to escape the heat. City clothes were replaced by lighter and whiter summer clothes. The change from resort clothing to city clothing led to the idea of not wearing white after Labor Day.
However, this mindset has changed and white is considered chic all year round. Today, the change is more about fabrics – from light clothing in summer to heavier fabrics in winter.

Labor Day is traditionally the first full weekend of the college football season. The Thursday after Labor Day also marks the start of the NFL season. It also marks the playoff hunt in Major League Baseball. Teams begin their push for the postseason.
