Yes, you can wear white after Labor Day, although one rule says otherwise. This rule can be traced back to the late 19th century, when the old money elite tried to rise “above” the nouveau riche. Another possibility behind this rule is that people were trading in their light summer clothes for darker tones and thicker fabrics due to the change of seasons, USA TODAY reported.
What is the history of Labor Day?
Labor Day was declared a national holiday in 1894 under then-President Grover Cleveland. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the holiday was to be celebrated annually on the first Monday in September.
Labor Day dates back to the labor movement of the 19th century, when labor activists championed the holiday to recognize that it was workers who were behind America’s prosperity, according to the federal department. The first recorded Labor Day celebration was in New York in 1882.
According to the History Channel, in the late 19th century, Americans worked 12-hour days to make a living. Children worked in mills, factories, and mines, earning far less than adults. During this time, unions increased their efforts to demand better working conditions, hours, and wages.
In 1894, in the run-up to Labor Day being made a national holiday, a strike occurred at Chicago’s Pullman Palace Car Company and later a boycott of all trains using Pullman cars, according to the Northern Illinois University Digital Library. Rail service was disrupted across the country and federal troops were sent to Chicago, turning a “largely peaceful strike” into clashes that left dozens of people dead or injured, the library said.
What is the difference between Labor Day and Memorial Day?
You may have confused Labor Day with Memorial Day, or vice versa. Both are national holidays on Mondays. They are the hallmark of summer (beginning or end) and generate sales.
But Memorial Day is about honoring those who died in service to America. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, it is observed annually on the last Monday in May.
The last Memorial Day was on May 27th.
