What is Kelly Slater’s greatest achievement?

What is Kelly Slater’s greatest achievement?

“I was in debt at 22, and winning was a matter of life and death for me,” says Kelly Slater, recalling not being able to pay his two-week lease on Mark Foo’s Hawaiian Homestead.

The quote is taken from a typically eloquent recollection from Kelly and crystallized in a story full of nostalgia for the bygone era of surfing. It’s just one of many highlights in the third of Nate Fletcher’s four-part interview with the GOAT.

The interview, conducted in the groundbreaking low-budget format with high authenticity via FaceTime + green screen + Apple Voice Memo, is a terrific demonstration of Slade’s skills as a storyteller and lays the foundation for what promises to be a continuation of Mr. Fletcher’s thrilling stories.

“We do it every week and everyone has four weeks,” Nate tells me. “So Slater has four, then Mason has four, then Tom Carroll. We’re putting out 10-minute interviews a week, but it’s 40 or 50 minutes total. We’re checking off multiple boxes instead of doing 56 different damn interviews. We’re just stringing it together a little bit. There’s going to be a lot of archival material because the Nalu guys are helping out. I got them all of my dad’s archive, but they also have Sonny Miller, Larry Haynes and Don King’s stuff.

“Their archives are quite extensive and we will be able to tell many stories about history.”

See you next week.
