Based on the youth crime novel of the same name by Holly Jackson. A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder quickly became a hit with Netflix subscribers. However, discussions of Pip Fitz-Amobi’s (Emma Myers) EPQ in the series will no doubt cause confusion among American viewers. The research-based endeavor is clearly some sort of school project, and is made even more confusing when she appears to be the only teenager working on such a project.

The show chronicles Pip’s investigation of her EPQ into a seemingly clear-cut murder case in her sleepy English town. Determined, focused and headstrong, Pip sets out on a quest to solve the mystery of Andie Bell’s (India Lillie Davies) disappearance and suspected murder five years ago. While everyone believes Andie’s boyfriend Sal Singh (Rahul Pattni) killed her, confessed to the crime via text message and then killed himself in the woods after an intentional overdose, Pip isn’t so sure.

Ever since Sal’s body was found in the days following Andie’s disappearance, Pip had a nagging feeling that something was wrong about the situation. Unlike everyone else in her town, she couldn’t believe that Sal would ever harm Andie. Now in her final year of school with a chance of a place at Cambridge, she decides to satisfy the urge that has nagged at her for years and use her EPQ to solve the case.

While many Americans understand the concept of writing college application essays, the idea of an EPQ certainly seems like a foreign concept, especially given the scope of Pip’s project, which is clearly an outlier compared to most EPQs. However, given the ambitions of a character like Pip, viewers should expect nothing less.

A relatively new concept on the other side of the pond, An EPQ, known as an Extended Project Qualification, involves independent research, similar to a university thesisFor Pip in A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder, Her EPQ is designed to demonstrate her research skills and help her gain acceptance into one of England’s most prestigious schoolsCompletely unrelated to her regular school work, Pip’s EPQ could have covered a variety of other topics, such as Gothic literature, a subject she is good at discussing.

Although Pip is a “good girl” with a lot of brains, she is also a bit of a non-conformist when it comes to her interests. When she sets her mind on something, she focuses to an extreme degree and doesn’t stop until she’s seen it through. Because of the nagging feeling she’s had since the discovery of Sal’s body five years ago, it’s a no-brainer for Pip to use her EPQ to solve the Andie Bell case.

She begins her investigation by questioning Andie and Sal’s friends about the night of Andie’s disappearance, but it doesn’t go as smoothly as she expected. As soon as she starts asking questions, people go silent, which only reinforces Pip’s initial doubts about Sal’s involvement and prompts her to continue her investigation. Eventually, she approaches Sal’s brother Ravi (Zain Iqbal), and the two waste little time before becoming a duo similar to Sherlock and Watson.

With his family essentially shunned by the community, Ravi is equally eager to find out the truth about his brother’s involvement in Andie’s disappearance. When he shows Pip the “confession” from Sal on his brother’s old phone, the perfect grammar makes it clear that someone else sent the text. For Pip, that’s all the proof she needs to justify her EPQ topic.

Pip’s EPQ is crucial in the Andie Bell case

As Pip digs deeper for the truth, it becomes abundantly clear that there is more to Andie’s disappearance and Sal’s death than anyone in town knows. Not only has Pip received personal threats since beginning her investigation, including the death of her dog, but her research continues to unravel an immensely tangled web involving a whole host of people.

Unfortunately, the closer she gets to the truth, the more pushback she gets from the adults in her life. She’s worried that Pip’s independent research will put her in danger and disrupt the lives of the victims’ families. Her mother Leanne (Anna Maxwell Martin) and English teacher Elliot Ward (Mathew Baynton), who is also her best friend’s father, persuade her to change her EPQ topic to a more sensible oneespecially Gothic literature.

Although Pip reluctantly agrees to a new EPQ topic, she refuses to give up her investigation and continues her research on Andie’s case along with Ravi, which ultimately pays off. She experiences some obstacles along the way and even doubts herself and Sal’s innocence before finally revealing the truth behind everything. After finding out what really happened to Andie and Sal, She refocuses the topic of her research project and creates a unique EPQ thatresponsible for solving a crimeThe police had been wrong for five years.

Pips EPQ in A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder is the only thing that made a difference. Without her, the mystery surrounding Sal’s apparent suicide and Andie’s disappearance would have remained forever. All episodes of A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder are currently streaming on Netflix.
