What hurricane activity can we expect over Labor Day weekend?

What hurricane activity can we expect over Labor Day weekend?

Hurricane season is a time when everyone from the Gulf Coast to the Atlantic Coast collectively holds their breath. From June through November, there is the potential for tropical activity and potential destruction.

For me, having lived in New Orleans, on the Gulf Coast of Florida, and on the Atlantic Ocean in Jacksonville, Florida, hurricanes are a natural part of life.

Of course, Labor Day weekend is the last “hurrah!” of summer and sometimes tropical activities and hurricanes can get in the way of that last family vacation.

Fortunately for everyone involved, tropical activity has been disconcertingly quiet this season, despite expectations that this year could see some of the largest storms on record. Despite the extreme heat in the Gulf of Mexico, nothing has happened so far.

Even better news: According to the National Hurricane Center in Miami, no tropical cyclone activity is expected for the next seven days, including Labor Day weekend.

However, two tropical disturbances are being observed in the Atlantic, which could ultimately develop into cyclones. But vacationers don’t have to worry about this on Labor Day either.

Given that we are in the La Niña season, a weather pattern closely linked to increased hurricane activity and warmer waters, it is extremely strange and even confusing to climate scientists why 2017 was such a quiet year in terms of tropical activity.

But I have experienced plenty of hurricanes and the destruction they can bring, and I can say that a quiet hurricane season is a good hurricane season.
