What happened to Ridley Scott’s sequel to Alien Covenant?

The big picture

  • Ridley Scott originally planned several
    Foreigner
    Prequels after
    Alien: Covenant
which continues the move away from Xenomorphs towards AI and synthetic beings.

would have examined the evolution and development of synthetic materials in the franchise.
  • Scott’s future plans for the
    Foreigner
    Prequel franchises are currently uncertain.

When Ridley Scott surprised the audience with Prometheus In 2012, fans were initially unsure whether the science fiction epic was a Foreigner Prequel or not. Online rumors, not to mention Scott himself, had suggested both that it was and that it wasn’t, but it wasn’t confirmed until the film came out. Five years later, we returned to Scott’s philosophical brand of science fiction, for Alien: Covenantwhich delved even deeper into the creation of the Xenomorphs, the existence of the Engineers and the devilish deeds of the android David (Michael Fassbender). But what happens next? David is still out there and the timeline has yet to catch up with him. Foreigner. Have we missed something? Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like we’ll get answers any time soon.

A third “Alien” prequel film was in the works

After the release of FederalRidley Scott was firmly convinced that more Foreigner Prequels were in the works. At one point, the filmmaker had even suggested as many as three or four, which was an overly ambitious forecast à la James CameronThe large number of Avatar Sequels. At one point Scott exclaimed that he would Foreigner franchise, which is expected to last up to six more films, and stated in an interview with the Sydney Morning Herald that he would not “close it again”. But unlike Cameron Scott apparently did not have the same assertiveness when it came to making these films a realityIn a 2019 report by Variety on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the original 1979 film, the media noted that the Federal Sequel was in the script phase, probably with John Logan still listed as the author.

The following year, Scott sang a different song. “We tried to reinvent the wheel with Prometheus And Federal,” said Scott Forbes. “It is questionable whether we will return there directly Because Prometheus woke it up very well.” There was cricket on the Foreigner Prequel franchise for a few years, that is, until 2024 Foreigner Interjection Alien: Romulus was announced. The existence of Romulus didn’t give fans of the two prequels much hope for more, as the franchise seemed to return to its horror roots from the original film, completely detached from the philosophical and existential themes explored in Scott’s sequels. Still, the fact that he apparently liked Romulus is a good sign, but many of us are still waiting for a Federal track.

What would further “Alien” prequels have been about?

Although we don’t know exactly what Ridley Scott had planned for David with future episodes of his famous prequel series, we do know that the Federal Successor – rumored to be titled Alien: Awakeningwould have turned away from the Xenomorphs and focused more on the development of synthetic“I think the development of the alien itself is almost complete,” Scott told the audience on the Empire Podcast in 2017, around the same time Federal in cinemas. “But I wanted to take the step and move on to a different story that would then be taken over by AIs.”

Scott is no stranger to analyzing the deeply human issues of artificial intelligence. He not only presented the android Ash (Ian Holm) in the original Foreignerbut he later directed Blade Runnerproduce Blade Runner 2049and led Raised by wolvesa television series about two androids raising human children. It would have been interesting to see what David would do next after the events of Federalespecially since the character does not appear in any of the subsequent films. Foreignerof course had Ash as antagonist and Aliens brought in Lance Henriksen than the likable Bishop, but Scott clearly has more ideas about the future of AI in our world – and in the darkest corners of space.

The scrapped project would have been a direct sequel to “Aliens.”

At the moment, it seems as if Scott’s Foreigner Prequels were at best put on ice or at worst abandoned altogetherHis fate remains to be seen and probably depends on the success of the Alien: Romulusa standalone film detached from most of the franchise’s main characters. Can humans survive in a world where both synthetic and alien life forms exist? Who knows, but should Ridley Scott ever decide to give us a more definitive answer, we’ll be here to see how it all plays out.
