Here is a recent MLB story from AP:
The Washington Nationals plan to call up outfielder Dylan Crews, Major League Baseball’s third-best prospect, for his debut Monday night against the New York Yankees, a person familiar with the decision told the Associated Press on Friday.
The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the decision had not yet been announced.
Crews, 22, was drafted No. 2 by Washington last summer – after his LSU teammate Paul Skenes was taken first by Pittsburgh – and quickly rose through the minor leagues.
Crews has a .272 batting average with 13 home runs and 68 RBIs in 99 games for Double-A Harrisburg and Triple-A Rochester this season.
He will join 21-year-old James Wood in Washington’s young outfield. Wood made his debut on July 1 for the rebuilding Nationals, who signed him to San Diego in 2022 in exchange for Juan Soto.
Nationals manager Dave Martinez did not confirm the decision to recall Crews, but said before Friday night’s game in Atlanta that he hopes for the same consistency that Crews showed in college and the minor leagues.
“He’s starting to hit the fastball a lot better. He’s walking like he did in college. And he’s playing incredible defense,” Martinez said.
Washington won the World Series in 2019 and hasn’t had a winning season since. General manager Mike Rizzo sold the core of that championship-winning squad, trading away Trea Turner and Max Scherzer in 2021 and Soto a year later.
The Nationals entered Friday at 58-70. They remained sellers at the trade deadline this season, sending outfielder Lane Thomas and reliever Hunter Harvey to contenders and putting an emphasis on developing young players the rest of the year.
Rizzo said before the deadline that he was pleased with the progress of the renovation.
Crews could complete an impressive outfield for Washington along with left fielder Wood and center fielder Jacob Young, an elite defender who has stolen 29 bases this season.
Since Thomas was traded to Cleveland, Alex Call has received most of the starts in right field. The 29-year-old has a .347 batting average in 29 games, but Crews has greater potential.
Crews was one of the best hitters in Division I when he partnered with hard-throwing right-hander Skenes to lead LSU to the College World Series title last year. He won the Golden Spikes Award as the country’s best amateur player and received a $9 million signing bonus when he signed with Washington.
“He’s having a great year. He really is,” Martinez said. “He’s a big part of our future.”
Crews said at the All-Star Futures Game last month that he was looking forward to joining Skenes in the major leagues.
“Whenever the time comes, you know I’ll be ready,” he said.
