Here is a recent MLB story from AP:

The relationship between the Olympics and baseball, which has been unstable and sometimes collapsing, is expected to move toward reconciliation in 2028.

This leads to the inevitable discussion about what the duty rosters might look like.

Commissioner Rob Manfred said last month he was open to the possibility of major league players participating, but recent history suggests some obstacles. Baseball was canceled after the 2008 Games, returned in Japan in 2021 and was left out of Paris this year.

The sport returns to the Los Angeles Games in four years. At the Tokyo Olympics, Major League Baseball only allowed players who were not on the 40-man roster to play – and teams also suspended many eligible young players. The potential health risk is real, a point made even clearer by Edwin Díaz’s season-ending injury at the 2023 World Baseball Classic.

So the 2021 US team was led by some well-known names like Todd Frazier and Edwin Jackson, along with a few interesting young players like Tristan Casas and Shane Baz. The mix, however, caused little excitement.

A possible compromise would be for teams to keep active major league players out of the Olympics, but allow top talent who have not yet made the major leagues to participate. The event would be similar to the All-Star Futures Game, but held as a full tournament.

In 2000, future major leaguer Ben Sheets defeated a strong Cuban team to secure the gold medal for the U.S. These days, it’s much easier for fans to keep track of top talent. Imagine if baseball was in the 2024 Games and the game’s best minor league players were mostly available. The U.S. team’s roster could have been full of players like Dylan Crews and Marcelo Mayer, two talents ranked in the top 10 according to MLB Pipeline.

These aren’t household names to casual Olympics viewers, but diehard baseball fans might recognize some of them — or be glad to have been introduced to them. Whether this team could win anything is another question. Nippon Professional Baseball suspended its 2021 season, which ultimately helped Japan beat the U.S. for the gold medal.

But with the Americans hosting the Olympics in four years, the baseball tournament is clearly an opportunity for… something. The players, owners and Manfred just have to figure out what.

TRIVIA TIME

Who led the US baseball team to gold in 2000?

Line of the week

Kyle Schwarber hit three home runs and had seven RBIs to lead the Philadelphia Phillies to a 9-4 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday night. The Phillies won two of three games in the series between the National League powers — though the success was short-lived for a struggling Philadelphia team.

The Phillies promptly lost three of their next four games against Arizona. They have lost 16 of their last 23 games.

COMEBACK OF THE WEEK

The Phillies’ game against the Dodgers was actually a good candidate, as Philadelphia was trailing 4-1 in the fifth inning. But on Sunday, the Colorado Rockies scored seven runs in the eighth inning to beat Atlanta 9-8. According to Baseball Savant, the Braves had a 99.5% probability of winning.

Jake Cave hit a two-run homer, Charlie Blackmon hit a two-run single, Ryan McMahon hit an RBI single and Brendan Rodgers hit a two-run double.

Atlanta has lost seven of eight games and the Braves are only half a game ahead of the New York Mets in the battle for the National League’s third and final wild card.

TRIVIA ANSWER

Tommy Lasorda. One of Lasorda’s former players, Mike Scioscia, nearly led the USA to gold in 2021.
