If your child is in kindergarten in a few years and there are several Charlottes and Olivers in the same class, it’s because both were the most popular baby names in Iowa in 2023.

The Social Security Administration tracks the most popular baby names in each state using data from Social Security card applications. On the administration’s website or in the Des Moines Register’s database of popular baby names in Iowa, users can search back to 1960 to see the 100 most popular names for boys and girls.

According to the Social Security Administration, 195 boys and 162 girls in Iowa were named Oliver last year.

Across the country, Liam and Olivia were the most popular names for boys and girls born last year. Both names top Iowa’s list of most popular baby names for 2023.

What are the most popular baby names in Iowa?

Here are the nine most popular baby names for boys born in Iowa in 2023. Oliver is at number 1. Behind each name is the frequency with which a child was given that name, according to data from the Social Security Administration.

The Social Security Administration in Iowa’s list of the 100 most popular baby names matches what maternity departments in the greater Des Moines area reported earlier this year. For example, UnityPoint Health Des Moines hospitals found that Charlotte, Eleanor, Amelia, Henry, Jack and Oliver are among the most popular female and male baby names in 2023.
