West Virginia quarterback Garrett Greene on college football’s “Freaks List”

West Virginia quarterback Garrett Greene on college football’s “Freaks List”

There aren’t many athletes like West Virginia quarterback Garrett Greene playing college football…and in fact, there aren’t many quarterbacks like Greene even playing in the NFL.

Greene’s otherworldly athleticism and talent earned him a No. 86 ranking on college football reporter Bruce Feldman’s annual “College Football Freaks List” – he is one of two Mountaineers on the list, along with outside linebacker Ty French at No. 94.

The list included eleven players from the Big 12 Conference, with Colorado wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter leading the group at No. 2.

Greene, who stands 6-foot-3 and weighs 200 pounds, has previously said he models his game after former Hessian Trophy winners Baker Mayfield and Johnny Manziel – he even wears Mayfield’s same No. 6 jersey. Greene also plays like a combination of the two, throwing for 2,406 yards, 16 touchdowns and four interceptions, along with 772 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns.

Greene completed elite-level testing during the offseason, including running a 10-yard dash in 1.48 seconds – faster than any other quarterback at the NFL Combine.

From The Athletic: “The former star Florida baseball catcher took over as starting quarterback and led the Mountaineers to a nine-win season in 2023. Greene proved to be one of college football’s best-kept secrets as a dual-threat quarterback in a program that has put together some spectacular performances over the past three decades.”

West Virginia opens the season at home against No. 9 Penn State on August 31.
