Oklahoma football has a rich history that includes 116 seasons of triumphs, from Bud Wilkinson and Billy Vessels to Danny Stutsman and Brent Venables. The Sooners have won 49 conference titles and six national championships and produced seven Heisman Trophy winners in nearly 12 decades. The team’s iconic crimson and cream uniforms have remained unchanged over the years. Recently, the Sooners announced new alternate uniforms inspired by the 1950s, a decade in which Oklahoma won three titles.
According to the team’s official Twitter page, Oklahoma football will be wearing a new third jersey this season. The Sooners first introduced their crimson third jerseys with cream accents and trim in 2014.
Oklahoma Football: Release a hype video to promote new uniforms
The Oklahoma football team will sport a new look for its Sept. 7 game against the Houston Cougars to start the season. According to its official Twitter page, the now SEC-affiliated team will wear primarily red, 1950s-style uniforms for its second home game against Houston. The uniforms will feature white horizontal stripes on the sleeves, while the helmet will feature the same white base and red stripes from the 1950s. Oklahoma’s announcement was accompanied by an epic hype video that included a snippet of longtime head coach Bud Wilkinson.
From Bud to Brent, the legacy lives on.

“In Norman, Oklahoma, coach Bud Wilkinson’s Sooners were polishing their 1951 Big 7 championship crown when the 1952 season began. Bud Wilkinson had a number of splinter-like Sooners. Speedy left guard Billy Vessels was awarded the Heisman Trophy.”
“Our team has worked very hard in training and we are just waiting until the game to see what kind of team we have.”
According to Soonersports, “Oklahoma’s 2024 third jersey is representative of the jersey worn by OU teams from 1946-1956.” The Sooners were a powerhouse during that era, winning three of their seven titles and finishing in the top 25 of the AP poll every season.
Bud Wilkinson: Honored by Oklahoma Football
Oklahoma football will honor Hall of Fame head coach Bud Wilkinson with its 2024 alternate jerseys. Wilkinson, an assistant coach at Oklahoma in 1946, took over the following season after his predecessor Jim Tatum left to fill the vacant head coaching position at Maryland football. Wilkinson spent his entire 17-year college football head coaching career with the Sooners, compiling an incredible 145-29 record.
In Oklahoma’s third season under Wilkinson’s leadership, the Sooners posted a perfect 11-0 record and finished with a 35-0 win in the Sugar Bowl over LSU. OU won its first of three titles under Wilkinson the following season despite a 10-1 record. Wilkinson’s best stretch was from 1954-56, when the Sooners posted a 31-0 record and won two titles. The 1956 Sooners allowed just 13 points in their final six games and led the country with 33 points scored per game.
