Washburn Soccer has high expectations for 2024 after appearing in the national title game

TOPEKA, Kansas (WIBW) – Washburn Soccer held its annual media day on Monday and the Ichabods are ready to build on their historic success beginning in 2023.

The ‘Bods fell one goal short of the national championship game last year and finished the best season in program history as state runners-up with a 1-0 loss to Point Loma.

But this year, most of their players from that squad are returning. Although they know that not everything will be the same as before, they expect the same success.

“The same winning standards, but this is going to be a new journey. And there are going to be different things we have to react to, there are going to be different injuries and different stimuli,” said head coach Davy Phillips. “This journey is going to look different than last year, even though it’s a very similar group.”

They have only lost two players and are confident they have what it takes to make it back to the title game and finish with a different result.

“I honestly think it’s just our team culture and everyone buying into what we’re trying to build here. Yes, any team can say that, but not every team can do it. And we’ve proven we can do it, and now we just need to do a little bit more to win the championship,” said veteran defenseman Jordan Tenpas.

The Ichabods will begin the 2024 season with their home opener against the University of Missouri – St. Louis on Thursday, September 5, at Yager Stadium.
