Harry Potter was originally intended as a children’s book, but its impact was undeniable. The franchise is one of Warner Bros.’ highest-grossing titles, and the producer who bought the rights explained how it came about.

Many of us know the story of how Harry Potter happened. Author JK Rowling came up with the idea for the story while on a train ride from Manchester to London and worked on it during some of the most difficult moments of her life, including domestic violence, becoming a single mother and losing her mother. As for the adaptation, producer David Hayman found the story and championed it. Now longtime producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura explained to Collider how he realized that Harry Potterand his early path to becoming one of the greatest films of all time.

Because it was marketed as a children’s book, Bonaventura had not read it. But when he finally did, he realized that this was more than just a story for children.It was a great book. We got it in proofs, before it was published. It was submitted by David Hayman, who was the provincial producer, and initially I didn’t read it that quickly because it’s a children’s book.. That’s how it was described to me. When I finally looked at it, I thought: “This is not a children’s book. This is a book for everyone.”

Warner Bros. bought Harry Potter for $2 million, a huge sum for a children’s book at the time. He continued: “So we bought it, and then I promptly got a call from one of my bosses who said, ‘What are you doing? You spent that much money on a children’s book.’ It was a lot of change and more than we would normally spend on, quote, an adult book. I said, ‘Well, it’s not really. It’s for everyone,” and they say, “No, either it’s animated or they’re small.” I said, “Well, this isn’t animated and it’s big.””

After the purchase, Steve Kloves was one of the first to come on board and write the script. “I then hired Steve Kloves, who was known for his dark, violent and demanding characters and was a very expensive writer – and who, by the way, stayed with me for every single film in the series.”

Bonaventura explained that he never received any praise, even after the book began to gain traction. “Then I got this call saying, ‘Okay, what are you doing? I don’t understand.'” It was basically $2 million at the timeand I said, “Well, Steve’s great. He’s going to do a really great job!” Then the book comes out and I want to say, two or three months after that call, “What the hell are you doing?” Harry Potter appeared on the cover of Time magazine. I never got the call: “You knew what you were doing!”””

The Harry Potter franchise is being rebooted as a TV series

The last film in the original series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2, Premiere in 2011 and just less than a decade and a half later, Warner Bros. already has plans for a reboot. This time, the Harry Potter The adaptation is not intended for the big screen, but as a television series for HBO. It will feature new actors and be closer to the books than the eight films.

Adapting a book is never easy, especially when you only have two hours. Harry Potter Movies were very popular and received critical acclaim, with many scenes omitted or edited for consistency and clarity. However, Warner Bros. wants the series, tentatively scheduled to premiere on HBO in 2026, to have 10 seasons, which is more than enough to adapt the seven books.

There are no cast members for the project yet, but ConsequenceFrancesca Gardiner will be the series’ writer and showrunner, and Mark Mylod will direct several episodes.
