It’s always fun to look at custom motorcycles because they represent a type of work of art that we can appreciate and, in some cases, even replicate.
But VTR Customs are one of the best custom motorcycle builders around and their skills in creating stunning machines are arguably unmatched. The latest completely rebuilt bike is a 2017 BMW R1200 R LC. The official name “Sultans of Sprint – Factory Class Bike” is inspired by a mix of aviation and an aircraft used in World War II. The bike is completely clad in aluminum, reminiscent of old airplanes.
But VTR Customs doesn’t want you to get the wrong idea, because this bike isn’t just built for showrooms or living rooms. Instead, they admit that it’s a weapon built for racing, and to live up to its name, the bike actually spits flames.
TW Steel (partner of VTR Customs) said the following about the character of their designs: “The spirit is rebellious. Sometimes you just want to do something because it feels right. At VTR Customs we care a lot about details, history and authenticity. We work very manually and creatively. So we do it by hand and decision by decision. The commonality between TW Steel and VTR Customs is that we focus on exceptional and outstanding pieces that no one has seen before.”
I don’t know about you, but when I see this amazing thing, I think of Anthony Hopkins racing away at 250 km/h in the movie “The World’s Fastest Indian.” The driver seen at an old airfield with this Spitfire is Amelie Mooseder.
But what inspired VTR Customs to convert their third BMW R1200R into a Spitfire? A statement from the racing crew reads: “After the overwhelming success of our two R1200 R LC conversions “Goodwood 12” and “Eddie21″, which were featured in numerous specialist magazines and on the largest custom platforms in the world, we decided to convert another R1200R.”
“It was clear that it had to be even more radical and it was also clear that our Amelie “had to” drive the thing again. We affectionately call her “factory driver” and our soul mate has now developed into a real friendship.
“With her exceptionally personable and natural charisma, she has contributed significantly to the popularity of our bikes and, above all, to the fun we have in our work as the VTR Customs Race Crew.”
According to VTR Customs, this is the most difficult conversion to date and one of the reasons for this was the low look that had to be created. This resulted in the height of this converted R1200R being reduced to just 35 inches. The engine and electronics of the bike remained untouched throughout the conversion.
