Massachusetts State Police announced that a 19-year-old was arrested following a multi-vehicle crash at the foot of the Sagamore Bridge in Bourne. The crash left a 79-year-old woman dead and an 83-year-old man seriously injured Friday evening.
According to police, Paul Myers of Plymouth was driving in the left lane of Route 6 West just before 7 p.m. when he attempted to pass a vehicle in front of him by illegally moving into the right lane. However, while attempting to change lanes, his vehicle did not have enough clearance and he collided with a Toyota Corolla that was already in the right lane.
As a result of the impact, the Corolla hit the curb, skidded over the central barrier and collided head-on with an oncoming car.
The Corolla passenger, identified as 79-year-old Martha Sheldon, died in the crash, police said Saturday, offering condolences to her family. The Corolla driver, identified only as an 83-year-old man, suffered serious injuries.
After the accident, Myers was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs. Further details were not immediately available.
Both Cape Cod-bound lanes and the left Cape Cod-bound lane were closed for several hours Friday evening. The accident remains under investigation.
