Vegan restaurant Jungle Cafe closes after a decade in Greenpoint

Vegan restaurant Jungle Cafe closes after a decade in Greenpoint

After a decade of serving Greenpoint, vegan restaurant Jungle Café (131 Greenpoint Ave.) is closing its doors.

Jungle Café made the announcement on Instagram late last week, noting that it opened almost exactly 10 years ago “with the prayer and vision of providing the New York community with delicious vegetarian food at a price affordable for all.”

Jungle Café did not announce an exact closing date, but wrote that it will continue to serve customers for the “next few weeks.”

Jungle Cafe, like so many others, appears to have fallen victim to the challenges of a post-pandemic restaurant scene. The vegan restaurant said that “the post-Covid climate has been challenging, but we have been optimistic and will remain optimistic and grateful in this final chapter.”

Jungle Cafe ended the announcement with gratitude to the community. “So many of you are like family and we want to celebrate and honor our time together. We are so grateful for the opportunity to be a part of the magic that is Jungle Cafe and we thank you for contributing to that magic,” they wrote.

Jungle Café is known for its 100% vegan menu, which includes tacos, burritos, burgers, salads and hearty burrito bowls, as well as a selection of appetizers like Beyond Beef Empanadas and steamed Korean vegetable dumplings handmade by Kimchee Market (191 Greenpoint Ave.).

It’s been a tough time for local vegan restaurants. Restaurants like Screamer’s Pizza and Terms of Endearment have closed, but alternatives like Next Stop Vegan (685 Manhattan Ave.) and Healthy as a Motha (234 Union Ave.) have recently opened.

Jungle Cafe offers numerous outdoor dining options on the sidewalk and in its newly renovated backyard, as well as delivery and pickup services. The restaurant is open Monday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
