USA is expected to field two Phoenix Suns in the gold medal final

On the biggest stage in the world – the gold medal game against France – the US team will likely rely on two Phoenix Suns stars in the starting lineup.

According to NBA insider Shams Charania, US coach Steve Kerr wants to include Kevin Durant in the starting lineup. This puts him alongside his Suns colleague Devin Booker and other names such as Steph Curry and LeBron James.

“Team USA plans to use all-time leading scorer Kevin Durant in Saturday’s gold medal game against France at the Paris Olympics, sources with knowledge of the decision told The Athletic on Friday,” Charania wrote.

“Jrue Holiday is expected to come on as a substitute for the U.S., these sources said.”

This will be Durant’s first start at the tournament after some initially thought he might not make it to Paris. Durant suffered a mild calf strain that caused him to miss all five of the US team’s friendlies.

Durant started from the bench in the US national team’s group matches and made a name for himself early on.

USA head coach Steve Kerr – who also coached Durant to two NBA Finals titles with the Golden State Warriors – said Durant probably would have been in the starting lineup earlier if he hadn’t been injured.

“If Kevin had been here from day one, he would probably be in the starting lineup,” Kerr said.

“That was the plan from the beginning. But because he missed all our friendlies and came in late, we had a lineup that we liked. When we brought him back, he was only supposed to play a certain number of minutes against Serbia. And he played so well and fit so well in that group and it was devastating to see that group together.”

Now he gets the nod and a gold medal is at stake. For Durant, it would be the fourth Olympic gold medal.

Booker, in turn, has been a pillar of support for Kerr throughout the USA’s journey to the Finals. Kerr said the Suns’ shooting guard has adapted best to his role on a team full of stars.

“He’s probably the one who’s been able to adapt the best to a different role in the NBA to play a new one here. He’s adapted to being a ball-moving guy. The offense works when he’s out there, the defense is really good,” Kerr said previously.

This would be Booker’s second gold medal.

The USA vs. France game is scheduled for later today at 12:30 p.m. (Arizona time).
