Urban Meyer explains the impact of new Ohio State OC Chip Kelly

College football fans who grew up with Chip Kelly’s Oregon Ducks will remember that there were two cornerstones of his offense that made those teams so explosive and entertaining.

Kelly was ahead of his time when it came to the read option, using it not only on the ground but also to set up the passing attack. The other thing these Oregon teams were known for was their speed. Kelly recruited fast athletes for his offense, ones that operated in and out of the huddle at breakneck and often no-huddle speeds.

It was a sight to behold, and for years the Ducks offered the most exciting offensive performance in the city.

Both college football and (to some extent) the NFL learned from Kelly’s exploits at Oregon and adopted many of his tactics. When Kelly later returned to coach in the NFL and then as head coach at UCLA, he continued to adapt and change his system. Kelly will now bring that experience and strategic philosophy to Columbus as the Ohio State Buckeyes’ offensive coordinator.

“This Chip Kelly offense is completely different than the so-called radical offense he ran as head coach at Oregon,” said former Ohio State head coach and current FOX Sports analyst Urban Meyer when discussing OSU’s offense with Colin Cowherd (h/t On3). “It’s completely different. And I believe it will help Ohio State. They have the quarterback that fits that scheme.”
