Update on fundraiser from hockey stand in Norwood, MA – NBC Boston

In the days since closing his ice cream stand fundraiser, a boy has raised over $6,000 for his brother’s hockey team, which serves physically and mentally disabled children in Massachusetts, the team says.

Danny Doherty, a 12-year-old from Norwood, was making homemade ice cream and planning to sell it, with half of the proceeds to be donated to the Boston Bear Cubs. But a complaint last week led to an official letter from the Norwood Health Department shutting down the stand — it turns out the creamy version of a lemonade stand violated the state’s food regulations.

“I didn’t like it,” Danny said. “I just wanted to raise money for my brother and I couldn’t do that anymore.”

A 12-year-old Norwood boy who tried to raise money for his brother’s handicapped hockey team by setting up an ice cream stand was served with a cease and desist order.

He and his mother donated the remaining ice cream, but their disappointment soon faded as the community gathered around him.

The unplanned publicity resulted in an overwhelming outpouring of support, according to Bear Cubs coach John Quill. He said the Canton-based team had received 156 donations totaling more than $6,000 as of Monday evening.

“I’m overwhelmed by the response. Some of the messages I’ve received have brought me to tears,” Quill said. “There are a lot of good people out there.”

NBC10 Boston has reached out to the Norwood Health Department for comment.
