Netflix has just released a trailer for its upcoming mobile game based on the hit Korean dystopian television series squid game, and it’s… very strange.

Let’s watch the trailer here and then I’ll explain my thoughts below.

The game will be released on Netflix around the same time as Season 2 (December 26), but doesn’t have an exact release date yet. It will be free for Netflix subscribers on iOS and Android, and because it’s Netflix, there won’t be any annoying microtransactions or time limits or all that nonsense that makes mobile gaming so frustrating.

But I’m really trying to figure out who the target audience for this game is, because it looks like a game for kids, but the subject matter is incredibly dark. Squid Game is obviously not a children’s show, but then why does this game look like it was made for elementary school children? The deaths look silly, with all kinds of gruesome deaths but basically no blood.

It feels like an exaggeration. As if they were combining this cash cow with the ridiculous reality TV series that squid game, a second season that I’m not sure we really need, and now this mobile game. I also think it’s a shame that Netflix restricts its games to mobile, as I’d really rather play them on PC. The new Dragon Prince: Xadia The game is fun, but I just don’t enjoy playing on my phone.
