University tour helps students set life goals

89 elementary school students from migrant worker families in Shanghai took part in a summer camp at the Shanghai University of Finance and Economics on Friday.

They were able to experience university life and learn about economics and finance.

The camp, titled “Walking with Light,” a long-running project run by students of the university, aims to provide the children of migrant workers in the city with a platform for off-campus learning, exchange and overall development.

This year, the university put together a team of 16 students and five teachers to supervise the participants. They organized a variety of activities for the students, including fun games, campus tours, expert lectures and discussions with older students – all aimed at giving the children a better understanding of university life and helping them develop more concrete life goals and plans for the future.

Professor Chen Yuanyuan, Deputy Dean of the School of Economics and Chief Advisor of the project, opened the camp with a speech outlining the team’s founding goals and its 16-year commitment to successive generations of children.

She shared a touching story about a former participant, Xiao Jia, who recently fulfilled her dream of attending SUFE, highlighting the lasting impact of the camp.

“I hope this summer camp experience plants the seed of a dream for the future in your heart, helps you set your own goal and encourages you to work hard to make it come true,” she said. “I believe every student will have a bright future.”

In the university’s spacious gymnasium, the children took part in a series of fun games such as Endless Circle (Hoop Throwing), Connect Five and Draw and Guess, which tested both their individual and team skills.

Professor Huang Zhenxing from the SUFE School of Economics delivered a lecture entitled “Financial Education in Everyday Life,” in which he made complex concepts accessible and engaging through interactive activities. In one session, students played the role of livestreamers who must make all decisions from pricing to sales.

The students also toured the university campus, including the History Museum and the Currency Museum, gaining insight into the university’s rich history and cultural heritage.
