CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The United States U20 women’s national team – which includes North Carolina’s Kate Levy – begins its 2024 U20 Women’s Lacrosse World Championship this week in Hong Kong.

The 10-day, 20-team tournament officially begins on Thursday, August 15, with the opening matches of the US group starting on August 16. The opening ceremony will take place on Wednesday at Mong Kok Stadium, which will also host the semifinals (August 22) and finals (August 24).

Levy was named to the final 22-man roster in July after a series of training camps. She is one of only two college freshmen to represent the Stars and Stripes.

Levy is the reigning high school girls’ national player of the year and was also named the Mid-Atlantic Girls’ Player of the Year and the Baltimore Sun’s All-Metro Player of the Year. She is a two-time All-American.

The midfielder from Chapel Hill spent her junior and senior years at McDonogh School in Maryland. She led the 2024 Eagles with 48 goals, 17 assists, 128 draws and 22 caused turnovers. Her 48 goals came on 76 shots – a shooting percentage of 63 percent. She recorded 55 more draw controls than her junior year, establishing herself as a force all over the court.

The U20 Women’s World Cup 2024 is the first ever World Championship to be held in Asia since 1997 and the first lacrosse event in the world to use the new age designation “under 20” for junior level competition.

Team USA has won five of seven Junior World Championships and reclaimed the gold medal five years ago in Ontario. Three former Tar Heels in Elisabeth Hillman (’23), Brooklyn Neuman (’23) and Caitlyn Wuerzburger (’24) were on the team in 2019.

The United States will enter the 2024 U20 World Cup as world number 1.
