United Way of Harrisonburg & Rockingham County raises awareness among local ALICE families

HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) – Beginning Wednesday, August 28, the United Way of Harrisonburg & Rockingham County will recognize local ALICE families for Labor Day.

The organization supports 38 percent of single women in Harrisonburg and Rockingham County who have ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, and Employed) conditions. These workers often struggle to keep their households from financial ruin. The organization also highlights its Community Impact Grants, which support sliding-scale child care stipends.

Development Director Jim Sacco said many locals are employed but struggle to make a living and provide community support, adding that education can help close the ALICE gap.

“ALICE is above the federal poverty level, so if you make a dollar more than the federal poverty level and you need help with something, you’ll often hear ‘no’ – and that’s where we step in and help those in need,” Sacco said.

The ALICE Budget and Income Status Tool can help you determine your household status and whether you are covered by ALICE. If you are considered ALICE and need assistance, contact RockBurg CARES.
