U17 World Cup 2024
USA narrowly ahead of Iran before final day of U17 World Championship
Team USA holds a one-point lead over Iran after Day 2 of the U17 World Men’s Freestyle Championships. Both countries are having a phenomenal tournament – Team USA has secured 5 medals so far and has the potential for three more, while Iran also has 5 medals but can only win two more on Sunday.
Team points are calculated according to the UWW’s top 10 placing points for the team ranking at the World Championships: 25, 20, 15, 15, 10, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2. It is worth noting that Russia and Belarus are not listed in the official team rankings as they compete as “neutral individual athletes”, however we have decided to include them in the rankings above to show how these countries perform at the U17 World Championships.
The team title could be decided on the home straight
Both Iran and Team USA have multiple wrestlers competing for medals on Sunday. Team USA has three guaranteed wrestlers in medal matches – Sammy Sanchez (for gold at 45 kg), Dom Munaretto (for gold at 51 kg) and Jordyn Raney (for bronze at 60 kg). In addition, Melvin Miller (71 kg) and Elijah Diakomihalis (92 kg) are still in the repechage and must win a bout to move into bronze medal contention. Iran also has three guaranteed wrestlers in medal matches – gold at 45 kg, gold at 71 kg and bronze at 92 kg. However, they only have one wrestler (at 60 kg) who can compete for bronze.
To make it a little simpler, Team USA can score a maximum of 162 points, while the maximum for Iran is 146. That means the United States has the edge, but still needs to win multiple games to claim the Tetam title. With the score so close on the final day, every game will count and we could see an incredible finish to the team race.
