Tyler Perry transforms into Beyoncé for an epic ‘Homecoming’ reenactment in the Madea credits scene

With a title like HomecomingTyler Perry couldn’t resist putting on a wig and squeezing into some Daisy Dukes at the end of his new movie, Madea, to pay major homage to Beyoncé.

Exactly, the credits scene for A Homecoming of Madea includes a full-scale reenactment of Queen B’s legendary 2018 Coachella performance, with the 6’5″ Perry belting out “Drunk in Love” in her iconic outfit from the performance alongside a full band and background dancers.

“I thought, ‘There’s no way I can call this (Madea) a film’Homecomingand not some kind of homage to Queen B,'” the director tells EW.

But before Perry could officially include the scene, he needed the Queen’s blessing. “Before anyone saw it, before Netflix saw it, I sent her a clip,” he says. Perry wanted to get the superstar’s blessing before including the scene in the credits. “Is that OK?” he asked, adding: “If not, it will never see the light of day. You say yes or no.”

The green light was a relief for Perry, who shot his version of the Coachella set the same day he filmed a final scene for the movie. “I’ve never been so nervous,” he recalls. “It wasn’t very comfortable for me, but it worked out.”

“I was there and so excited,” says Brandon Black, who plays the first gay character in a Madea film. “I knew it was going to happen, but they didn’t tell us, it wasn’t in the script… And when it happened, it was at the very end of shooting. So it was like we had done all the work on this movie and now we could sit back, relax and watch this show.”

Black recalls how it all came together, saying, “It was exactly how you’d imagine it. There was a crane, and it was dancing, and those big old legs were in the Daisy Dukes. It was incredible. It was so cool, and it was a great moment for all of us to kind of hang out and relieve the pressure, because we were done, we shot the whole movie, and now we’re just standing here watching this crazy stuff go down. It was amazing.”

And what was Beyoncé’s reaction to the elaborate homage?

“Beyoncé was laughing so hard,” says Perry. “And here we are and there it is.”
