Tyla plays short Outside Lands set after starting half an hour late

South African artist Tyla arrived on stage more than 30 minutes late on the first day of Outside Lands, disappointing fans who were looking forward to her debut performance at the festival.

The Grammy Award winner, who entered the Billboard Hot 100 last year with the Afrobeats-influenced single “Water,” performed less than 20 minutes after beginning her set at 6:37 p.m. on Friday, August 9. Her performance on the Sutro Stage was scheduled for 6:05 p.m.

While Lindley Meadow was initially packed with eager concertgoers, many left as the wait grew longer, with some heading off to see British electronic band Jungle and former Broadway star and pop sensation Reneé Rapp.

When Tyla finally took the stage, she performed a series of pop-R&B hits from “Safer” to “Truth or Dare” to “Water” alongside a giant tiger sculpture. The crowd cheered as she showed off her signature “Bacardi” dance moves, but the performance ultimately proved to be too short.

Tyla didn’t dwell on her lateness on stage, but performed as usual, making jokes about the cool San Francisco weather and not shaving her armpits.

Unfortunately for fans who were expecting more, this is one of the few opportunities to see Tyla in the near future. The rising 22-year-old artist has canceled all of her North American tour dates, including a stop at the Regency Ballroom in San Francisco.

Outside Lands is Tyla’s second festival stop in the US, following Lollapalooza in Chicago last week. She canceled her appearance at the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival earlier this year due to an injury.

Bay Area resident Baruti Armstrong had planned to see both Jungle and Tyla and was frustrated by the delay. Although he considers himself a bigger fan of the former, he wanted to try and see the up-and-coming new artist while he could.

“This is great,” he said as Tyla began her set. “I just wish it was 30 minutes earlier.”
