Two 13-year-old students are accused of threatening violence on Snapchat at Broward schools

During the first week of the new school year, two students threatened violence against Broward County Public Schools, while two other students are under investigation.

“This is no joke and there is no laughing matter,” said Sheriff Dr. Tony. “If you make threats on social media or anywhere else, we will track you down and arrest you.”

The Broward County Sheriff’s Office (BSO) said that Threat Management Unit (TMU) investigators received a tip from the FBI on August 10 regarding a 13-year-old student’s Snapchat post.

Investigators reported that the post included a partial photo of the student as well as a written threat to carry out a massacre at the Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) offices in Fort Lauderdale. The student was reportedly upset about BCPS’s new cell phone policy.

Shortly thereafter, on August 15, TMU detectives said they were notified by the FBI of a threat against Cooper City High School made by a Broward County student on Snapchat. The investigation into that threat led to the arrest of a 13-year-old girl.

Both students face charges of threatening violence or terrorism and using a communications device to commit a crime.

BSO also reported that two additional threats against various schools in Broward County are under investigation, which could potentially lead to additional arrests.
