Tropical Storm Debby brings severe weather hazards to Bladen County –

As Tropical Storm Debby continues to move inland, residents of Bladen County and surrounding areas face significant weather hazards. A Flash Flood Warning is in effect for the region beginning at 6:00 a.m. on August 8, 2024, with various weather hazards forecast.

Concerns about flash floods

The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning for much of the forecast area, including Bladen County. The rain bands associated with Debby are expected to trigger flash flooding, particularly affecting low-lying, poorly drained, and urban areas. Residents are urged to remain alert and monitor local weather reports.

Weather threats at a glance

1. Flood Risk: The region is at high risk for flooding, with the areas around Elizabethtown, Lumberton and Whiteville particularly at risk. Heavy, persistent rain could result in significant flooding.
2. Tornado Danger: There is a danger of tornadoes, especially in areas east and north of Bladen County. Affected areas include parts of Wilmington and surrounding areas. Tornado warnings and watches are in effect, and residents should be prepared to seek shelter if necessary.

• Centerville Baptist Church: 18577 NC Hwy 53 E, Kelly

Residents seeking accommodation should consider the following guidelines:

• Alcohol, drugs, tobacco and e-cigarettes are not allowed.
• Weapons are prohibited.
• Cots and blankets are available. Please bring your own pillows.
• West Bladen is the only pet-friendly shelter (cats and dogs only).
• Food will be provided, but bringing food from outside is not permitted.
• People with special needs should be accompanied by nursing staff.
• Bring necessary items such as medicines, oxygen and hygiene products.
• Electronic devices are allowed; bring chargers.
• Adults are encouraged to bring games and activities for children.
