Trade between the US and Mexico reaches new record, exceeding 5 billion in the first half of the year

WASHINGTON – Trade between the United States and Mexico totaled $415.4 billion in the first six months of 2024, a record for that period, according to the latest data from the Census Bureau. About 16% of all products imported into the United States came from Mexico.

Of this total, $249 billion came from products imported from Mexico and $166 billion from exports.

In June, trade totaled $69.93 billion, up 2.1% year-on-year, making June the United States’ top trading partner for the sixth month in a row.

The top three U.S. imports from Mexico in June were gasoline, auto parts and computer chips, according to data analyzed by U.S. Trade Numbers. Furniture totaled $191 million, representing 0.45 percent of total trade for the month. Year-to-date, the U.S. imported $1.1 billion worth of furniture from Mexico, also representing 0.45 percent of total trade.

After Mexico, the United States’ most important trading partners in June were Canada (13%), China (13%), Germany (4.9%), Japan (4.4%) and Vietnam (4.3%).

According to Furniture Today, Mexico’s furniture exports to the US have grown 65% over the past five years, overtaking China, Malaysia and Indonesia. Mexico is growing even faster than Vietnam, by almost 25 percentage points. Mexico ranks third among countries exporting furniture to the US, only Vietnam and China are better.
