Tornado-damaged Wilson County middle school prepares for first day of school

It was less than two weeks ago that an EF3 tornado severely damaged Springfield Middle School in Wilson County.

With repairs still underway and the new school year just around the corner, the middle school is preparing to start classes with limited space for students.

The sixth and seventh grade wings of the school sustained severe damage to the walls and roof. The classrooms and other rooms in these wings were considered a total loss.

A chain link fence has been installed around the building while repairs are carried out

On Monday, Superintendent Lane Mills said he would provide more information on the progress made in reopening schools to students.

“There will still be some cordoned off stuff on that side,” Mills said. “The building is safe and functional.”

The school plans to use mobile units as temporary classrooms and plans to use the 8th grade wing and main building while the two damaged wings are rebuilt.

Builder Services of NC has been working to remove excess water and secure the damaged roof and walls. The company concluded that 75% of the structure is safe – and that students will be able to return for the start of the school year, which begins next week.

Orientation sessions will continue on Tuesdays at Lucama Middle School.

The board meets on Monday at 6:30 p.m.
