Tordotcom publishes Hugo-nominated novella “Rose/House” by Arkady Martine

Tor Publishing Group is pleased to announce the acquisition of the novella Rose/House from Arkady Martine to Editor-in-Chief Kelly Lonesome via DongWon Song of the Howard Morhaim Literary Agency. The book is also published by Tor UK under Editorial Director Sophie Robinson. The novella was originally published in a special limited hardback edition by Subterranean Press in 2023 and is nominated for the Hugo for Best Novella.

All the houses in Basit Deniau are haunted.

Detective Maritza Smith grew up in China Lake and knows that the late architect’s most famous work, Rose House, is no exception. And a house with artificial intelligence is a common thing; but a house that Is an artificial intelligence that is embedded in every load-bearing beam and every fine marble tile? That’s something completely different. That’s Rose House.

Deniau has been dead for a year and the house is locked, as his will stipulated. But one evening, Detective Smith receives an alarming call from Rose House: there is a dead person there.

It is not Basit Deniau, nor is it Dr. Selene Gisil, a former protégé and the only person allowed into Rose House once a year. It is someone else. But Rose House refuses to communicate further and hangs up.

No one can get into the Rose House except Dr. Gisil, who was abroad at the time the death was reported. Detective Smith must call her back to the Mojave Desert and gain access to the house – and the body – before it’s too late.

Because there might be someone else in there.

Rose/House will be published in hardcover by Tordotcom Publishing in early 2025.

From the author Arkady Martine:

“I am delighted to be working with Tor Publishing Group and Kelly Lonesome to Rose/House accessible to a wider audience. This book is my arthouse novella (… literally?), a horror-SF-Gothic experiment about deserts and architecture, sown from the seeds of my fascination with genius loci, artificial ghosts and Shirley Jackson’s Haunting of Hill House. I can’t wait to share it – Rose/House itself and everyone it opens its doors to – with new readers.”

By Kelly Lonesome, Editor in Chief:

“Arkady Martine’s incredible novella Rose/House is like a shimmering mirage in the desert: the closer you think you are to solving the mystery at its core, the more elusive the truth becomes. It’s a gripping must-read – it has transformed the haunted house paradigm into a wonderfully atmospheric noir tech thriller. I’m so pleased to be able to bring this story to more readers via Tordotcom, so don’t worry if you missed the limited edition from Subterranean Press! Rose/House is a locked house crime thriller, perfect for science fiction fans, with a beating heart in the style of Ann Leckie, Becky Chambers, Martha Wells and Annalee Newitz.”
