Tomlin: Fields’ fumble “ruined a lot of good things”

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin was pleased with quarterback Justin Fields’ play in the team’s season opener, but acknowledged that two fumble snaps impacted the game.

“I thought he did some good things,” Tomlin said, according to ESPN’s Brooke Pryor. “But (Fields) was obviously a part of the (center-quarterback) swap, and from my perspective, that’s a dual responsibility for center and quarterback. It negated a lot of good things in those first few drives.”

Fields finished the 20-12 loss with 67 yards on 5 of 6 passing. He was sacked twice and had two fumbles in the game before giving way to Kyle Allen for most of the game.

Aside from these serious mistakes, Fields was generally happy with his game.

“I think we were in a good rhythm and we were moving the ball well,” Fields said. “I think the fumbled snaps and stuff like that can ruin a whole drive, but I think overall rhythm, we got in and out of the huddle quickly and felt good.”

“And I think as far as pinning goes, we just have to be on the same page. I take on the responsibility of just being on the same page and knowing who’s in the middle or how I need to adjust and what I need to do.”

Fields will likely get a chance to correct those mistakes when the Steelers host the Buffalo Bills for their second preseason game on August 17.
