But Felton and other members of the Slytherin House cast had not only dismissed the young actress’s enthusiasm, but also humiliated Watson.

I guess we thought we were a little cooler. We spent our free time together listening to rap music – Wu-Tang, Biggie, 2Pac… So we were predictably dismissive (about Watson’s dance routine). We went to Emma’s show giggling, and the giggling got louder as she danced.

We just acted like stupid boys, mostly out of discomfort and because we thought it would be cool to make fun of her, but Emma was visibly upset by our thoughtless reaction. I did feel a bit like a fool, and rightly so… Everyone has moved on. It was just a stupid, thoughtless teenage act, things like that happen every day. Why does this moment stick in my mind so much? Why is it so painful for me to think about it?

Tom Felton recounted how they giggled and made fun of Emma Watson’s performance. He admitted his behaviour was driven by a mixture of youthful awkwardness and a misplaced sense of cool. However, when Felton noticed Watson was visibly upset, he admitted he was quick to express regret and later apologise. Although Watson, who had a crush on Felton, immediately forgave him, Felton confessed that the memory has weighed heavily on his conscience ever since.

The answer, I think, is that over the years I’ve come to understand that Emma has had the hardest time of all of us, the most difficult situation to deal with, and that since early childhood. The last thing she needed, in an environment that should have been – and usually was – safe, friendly and familiar, was Josh and I laughing at her dancing.

That’s why I’m ashamed when I remember our behavior. And that’s why I’m glad that our friendship didn’t fail because of my insensitivity, but became something deeper. A touchstone for both of our lives.

Tom Felton acknowledged that his laughter, in what should have been a supportive and nurturing environment, only added to the difficulties Emma Watson was already going through. So when he overcame his perceived coolness and realized what he had done, it became a sore spot for him. Felton felt ashamed of his own actions and experienced a significant moment of personal growth.
