Tokyo Xtreme Racer returns after 18 years, new game coming to Steam next year

I recently wrote about a game that sought to revive the old magic of Tokyo Xtreme Racer, a series of late-night city racing games that hadn’t seen a new (non-mobile) title in 18 years. Oh, what a neglected niche these indie developers were filling!

Yes, original developers Genki just announced a new Tokyo Xtreme Racer coming to Steam next year.

Here’s a teaser trailer that’s basically just a bunch of logos for previous games:

The new entry is simply called “Tokyo Xtreme Racer” and there isn’t much more to find out on its Steam page.

“Tokyo Xtreme Racer is a racing game set in a locked-down Tokyo of the future. You compete with your customized cars for the highest speed on the highways that wind through the city and try to reach the top,” the description reads. “Drive real cars on carefully recreated tracks, compete against strong rivals, slip through other cars and engage in nerve-racking battles. This is a series with unparalleled appeal.”

This is interesting, because Tokyo Xtreme Racer was, above all, a mood, and at least part of that mood came from PS2-era graphics. Emulating that aesthetic in its jagged polygons and drum-and-bass soundtrack is part of what makes Night-Runners Prologue so powerful. I wonder if Tokyo Xtreme Racer, modernized, with less definable style but still on a limited budget, will feel comparatively lackluster.

However, the Steam page says to look forward to more information being released, and I do. Next, can someone revive Racing Lagoon?
