Toddler in hospital for months after foot amputation in daycare, says family

QUINCY, Wash. (Gray News) – A 2-year-old boy is still in the hospital after his foot was severed by a riding lawn mower at a daycare center nearly two months ago, according to his family.

A report from KING identified the child as Mateo Pacheco Elliott, who has been in a Seattle hospital since the injury on June 24.

Close family friend Angela Axelson has set up a GoFundMe page to help pay for Mateo’s ongoing medical expenses.

Axelson spoke to KING and explained exactly what happened that day at the daycare center in Quincy, Washington.

Axelson said the daycare owner was the one driving the riding lawn mower when Mateo was seriously injured.

“Two-year-old Mateo tried to talk to her and ran to the lawnmower, slipped and fell. He went under and his right foot had to be amputated,” Axelson told KING.

According to GoFundMe, Mateo’s foot had to be amputated and he suffered other serious injuries to his legs that required further surgeries.

Quincy police investigated but could not find enough evidence to file charges.

“Yes, accidents can happen, but if you pay people to watch your children, you should be able to trust that the provider will take comprehensive care of them and not seriously injure them,” Axelson told KING.

However, according to the KING report, the state Department of Children, Youth and Families has revoked the daycare’s license and is still investigating.

There have been numerous updates on the GoFundMe page, most recently reporting that Mateo has had his full body brace removed but is still battling numerous health issues.

“Please keep praying,” his family wrote.
